Jan. 19 Walden Forum Event

The Walden Forum presents
"What We Know about Climate Change"
Thursday, January 19 at 7:30
First Parish Meeting House, Wayland

Dr. Kerry EmanuelDr. Kerry Emanuel a Professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT, will discuss his book “What We Know about Climate Change.”  What are the risks and possible benefits of climate change?  How much of it is manmade and how much is natural?  Will we be in for more intense hurricanes, how will society cope with increased incidence of drought and floods, and will there be a problem with climate refugees? And has the American public been misinformed by a media obsessed with sensational debate? Dr. Emanuel will review what is known about climate science and discuss the problem from the sober point of view of risk assessment and management, focusing on the enormous challenge of dealing with uncertain risks affecting primarily our grandchildren and their descendants.

About Walden Forum

The Walden Forum is a free public series that promotes learning and discussion about important ethical, religious, political, scientific, social and other topics in a live forum setting.  Dynamic speakers may challenge preconceived notions about the world around us and offer access to issues that might not otherwise be heard in Wayland or our surrounding community. Featuring world-class speakers on great topics throughout the year, The Walden Forum is a non-religious community program offered by First Parish in Wayland, and held at the historic 1815 First Parish Meetinghouse at the intersection of Routes 20 and 27 in Wayland Center. http://www.waldenforum.org

Katrien Vander Straeten posted the following on the Transition Wayland Facebook page:

This video documents a climate change conference run by a group of Republican voters upset by their party's anti-science rhetoric. A keynote speaker was Dr. Kerry Emanuel. Right after the video was published, he started receiving hate mail with threats to his family (http://motherjones.com/environment/2012/01/mit-climate-scientists-wife-threatened-frenzy-hate).

Folks, Dr. Emanuel will be our speaker in next week's Walden Forum in Wayland. We hope to show him that we support his courageous speaking out for science and rationality, and that we don't condone personal threats as part of the debate on climate change.

Be there: Walden Forum, First Parish, Wayland, Thursday, Jan.19, 7:30 pm.
